The Chairman of Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Dr. Olusola Akinbode, has commended the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu and the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for their effort towards tackling hunger, improving nutrition and enhancing the welfare of vulnerable Nigerians.
Akinbode, gave the commendation during the launching of the National Community Foodbank in Yewa North, an initiative designed to support vulnerable members of the community with locally sourced and nutritious food items.
He described the initiative as a timely intervention for children under 6 years, pregnant and lactating women, saying it would complement the State government's efforts to address food insecurity and improve the nutritional well-being of families, particularly children.
“When hunger is solved, growth follows. Food security is not only about putting food on the table, it is about ensuring that our children receive the right nutrients to grow, learn and contribute meaningfully to the society. We must continue to support initiatives that place the welfare of the most vulnerable at the centre of development,” he said.
The Chairman commended Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for championing programmes aimed at reducing poverty, supporting vulnerable households and combating malnutrition, while also lauding Governor Abiodun, for his administration’s interventions in agriculture, food security, social welfare and grassroots development.
Also speaking, a Doctor with the Council’s Primary Health Centres, Dr. Taiwo Adebowale, lauded the First Lady for her leadership in promoting food security and tackling malnutrition among vulnerable Nigerians, urging residents to take ownership of the initiative and work collectively to ensure that no vulnerable person was left without access to basic nutrition.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Kemi Falolu and Mrs. Mawadat Olatunji, appreciated Sen. Tinubu and Governor Abiodun, for the initiative, promising to make judicious use of the food items provided.
Highlights of the programme included; sensitisation on various family planning methods available for child spacing by the Council’s Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs. Wuraola Martins, as well as education on the importance of balanced diet by the Council’s Nutrition Focal Person and Food Scientific Officer, Mrs. Rofiat Ajayi.
