Democracy day,
Celebrating how we're led astray
A fallen nation is what we have become
With a hazy view of the future to come.
We celebrate our past heroes
Virtuous leaders and corrupt patriots
Giving us hopes and throes
Both, enjoyed by compatriots
We scream for this day
Chanting with our voices up high
Yet those voices have no say
Voices our leaders deny
We've lost our identity
With no iota of dignity
But regained during elections
With votes, from inception to completion
Claiming to give milk and honey
But leading us to the red sea
With no Moses to part the waves
Taking us to our early graves
Employment is rare
Only for a connected few to steer
School certificates are ridiculed
Yet empowerment is overruled
Power in the hands of old
Claiming experience
Yet its being sold
In exchange for affluence
Crimes are committed by officials
Roaming free as beneficials
But when the poor commits
The jury convicts
Old and young pray for a noble cause
To keep corruption on pause
Perhaps totally destroyed
And good governance is enjoyed
Oh, Democracy day,
Accompanied with our anthem
Sang by free slaves on a free day
Praying for better days to come.
